Welcome to Braille Brain! Braille Brain is a training program funded by the US Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Agency, (H235E190002). The overall goal of the project is to promote literacy and STEM instruction provided by pre-service and in-service TSVIs, paraprofessionals, parents and educational team members. This grant is in year 3 of a 5-year project. STEM Best Practices are in development and will be released soon.
The Braille Brain microsite consists of three main components: 1) braille training materials that focus on UEB literary braille and Nemeth Braille, 2) braille reading and writing assessment, 3) instructional materials and evidence-based practices that support braille literacy and STEM instruction.
Braille Brain includes a braille training program for teachers, paraprofessionals, and family members to learn braille. It consists of two courses, UEB literacy braille (including UEB math) and Nemeth braille. The courses may be used to prepare pre-service and in-service teachers to pass the braille competency exams associated with teacher preparation programs for teachers for the visually impaired. The course is also available to teachers, paraprofessionals and parents of children who are braille learners who wish to learn and practice braille alongside their students/children. Learn more.
The Braille Brain microsite includes resources to support pre-service and in-service teachers seeking to implement evidence-based practices to promote braille literacy and STEM learning through the use of specialized technology. Learn more.
This project was funded by the US Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration (RSA), 84.235E Special Projects and Demonstrations for Providing Vocational Rehabilitation Services to Individuals with Severe Disabilities. The project is titled: Braille Brain: A Braille Training Program for pre/in-service Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments (TSVI), paraprofessionals, and other educational team members (H235E190002). The grant was originally awarded to California State University, Los Angeles, in collaboration with APH and Paths to Literacy.
