Professional tools for practicing the functions of the visual system at the critical age of its development.
This free web based app was designed by an OT (occupational therapist) student in Israel and has worked at Eliya Association for the Blind for the past 10 years. It is widely used there.
Helping Our Young Students Make the Most of Their Functional Vision
The first few years of life are the most important for developing visual functions. However, toddlers with
severe visual impairments may neglect their sense of sight and trust other more reliable senses instead.
Therefore, it is important that therapists will help them engage and train their visual functions at this critical
age. For example, by using high contrast lights in a dark room.
A screen has a strong electronic back lighting that can engage toddlers in visual tasks. Light activity is a free non-profit software that does just that, helping visually impaired babies and toddlers practice their visual skills with a therapist in a dark room, with about 40 different activities.
Examples include:
- Cause and effects games
- Understanding illustrations
- Sensory games with vibrations
- Relaxation activities
- Timing games
- Model matching
- Scanning and locating static or moving objects
- Hand-eye coordination games
- Switches
- Virtual light box
- Illustration printing
- Coloring page printing
This software is being used by almost all therapists and organizations in Israel that work with babies and toddlers with visual impairments. It is very popular in Israel because it originally had Hebrew voices and symbols from Israeli culture and lifestyle. I have decided to make an English translation with vocals in hopes it may contribute to other babies and toddlers around the world.
