Positional Concept Activity for Pre-Braille

One of the prebraille activities I'm doing with a student is discussing left/right and top/bottom of a page. We start with the hexagon in the middle of the plastic page and then she or I move it. She then must tell me the location of the shape.
 
She enjoys the sound and feel of the Velcro. Other shapes are used to give a little variety to the activity as well as working on naming the shape. The activity is followed through in the classroom when she is not with me. The teacher gives the same positional terms when my student is working on a worksheet or craft in the classroom.

Materials: 

  • plastic shapes
  • velcro
  • sheet on which to stick the shape

Procedure: 

  1. Ask the student to point to different parts of the page, e.g. "Show me the top."  "Where is the left side?"  "Point to the bottom right corner."
  2. Place the shape in the middle of the page and ask the student to move it to a named location.
  3. Place the shape in various locations on the page and ask the student to name where it is.

Variations: 

  • Use a variety of shapes and make the directions more complex, e.g. "Put the triangle on the top right corner."
