Comprehension Strategies for Students with Autism

Teaching strategies to increase reading and listening comprehension in students with autism and other disabilities.

The article Tell Me About the Story: Comprehension Strategies for Students with Autism by Paula Kluth on the Reading Rockets site offers helpful tips to increase comprehension skills.  The article stresses the importance of giving the students many ways to demonstrate their comprehension, as it may be difficult for some students to answer traditional questions, such as “Tell me about the story”.  The following strategies are recommended:

  • Build background knowledge
  • Think aloud
  • Drama
  • Reciprocal teaching
  • Retelling

While the article is geared toward teaching students with autism, these tips are useful for all students with comprehension difficulties.
