Using Constant Time Delay to Teach Braille Word Recognition is a research study by Jonathan Hooper, Sarah Ivy, and Deborah Hatton that appeared in the March-April 2014 issue of JVIB (Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness). The purpose of the study is to test the effectiveness of constant time delay to teach new braille words to students with visual impairments and intellectual disabilities.
Constant time delay is a technique that is used to teach print sight words and picture recognition, and the results of this study indicate that this strategy can be adapted and implemented with braille readers in typical teaching environments. The findings suggest that constant time delay can be an effective strategy to teach highly motivating contracted braille words to students with visual impairments and intellectual disabilities. In this method words are taught in isolation and the article concludes that this would be just one of multiple teaching tools or methods used with a student.
